How it began
What began as one man’s vision of how consumer goods should be marketed has grown into one of Malaysia’s most well-known local brands - Tohtonku. Tohtonku Sdn Bhd was started in 1964 by entrepreneur Lim Joi Him, who saw huge opportunities in the consumer market of the 60’s.
Instead of plying his goods through retail outlets, Lim directed his sales force to engage in the door-to-door, personalized sales concept. This avenue of sales proved to be a huge success in the years prior to widespread television advertising and social media branding. Within a short period of time, Tohtonku had attracted the attention of international investors keen to expand to a fresh new market such as Malaysia.
Chief among the investors was Earth Chemical Co Ltd from Japan, which quickly appointed Tohtonku as their sole distributor in Singapore and Malaysia. Tohtonku’s role at the time was to bring in and distribute the product known as King Kong Rat Killer in both countries. The partnership proved to be a definitive milestone for Tohtonku as it signaled the beginning of Tohtonku as an international player. Meanwhile, on the home front, Lim soon became known as ‘King Kong Lim’ to his fellow Penangites.
A few short years after its inception, Tohtonku Trading Company made the transition to Tohtonku Sdn Bhd, a name it keeps to this day. With the growth that came to Penang during the 80’s, Tohtonku ventured beyond trading and into manufacturing – building a plant in Penang to cater to an ever growing volume of consumers and retailers. The plant produces and packs all Tohtonku finished products, in line with Tohtonku’s support of Malaysian-made products.
Celebrating 30 years of excellence
One of Tohtonku’s most beloved brands, Follow me, recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The celebration was themed “30 Years of Quality” and signified Follow Me’s commitment towards Malaysians of the past and the future.
In his speech delivered during the celebration, Mr. Jasper Lim, Director of Tohtonku Sdn Bhd, recounted Follow Me’s history through the years. Started in 1983, Follow Me began with a dream to make every man and woman look and feel confident about themselves. With this aim in mind, Follow Me consistently innovates and assimilates new ideas and products into its ranks.
Growing in tandem with the coutry’s progress, Follow Me currently boasts over 200 types of personal care products, with some being Halal-certified. These are sold within and outside of Malaysia, especially in Southeast Asian countries.
Beyond Follow Me’s comprehensive product range is its dedication to provide quality, trusted and affordable personal care products for all Malaysians. This falls in line with Tohtonku’s corporate philosophy of creating value for the company and for society, thereby creating a win-win situation for all.
In 2013, Follow Me embarked on a year-long campaign to thank all Malaysians for the support it has received over the past 3 decades. Together with MyKasih Foundation, a non-profit organization, Follow Me worked to fulfill their pledge of giving back to society. Personal care products were supplied to 300 poor and needy families under the MyKasih Foundation. In his speech, Jasper Lim said, “It is my sincere hope that our efforts will bring joy and ease to the families we are supporting, and as Director of Tohtonku, I look forward to making charity a regular affair so that we may touch the lives of those in need around us.”

Tohtonku’s products reach all over Southeast Asia including Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Brunei, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Some are rebranded to suit the cultures and requirements of the intended market. Tohtonku has progressed from a homegrown name into a multinational brand. Its products are benchmarked against international standards that bring them into close competition with other established international brands. That’s why you can always find Tohtonku products on shelves all over Southeast Asia including Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Brunei, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The company has 932 capable employees overseeing a total of 19 brands. Some of these include Follow Me, Nutox Oxyfusion, Nanowhite, Secret, Ubermen, A’laisyah, Can Can, Everday, Koolfever, Ammeltz, Sawaday, Saniplast, Seirogan, Breathpop, ARS, You&Me, Rainna, King Kong and many more.
We currently have 6 offices in Malaysia and the main office is situated in Penang while the Sales & Marketing office is located in Kuala Lumpur.
